GLACIER CAMERA CLUB

Next Meeting

Our next meeting will be at the Pin & Cue Bowling Alley in Whitefish, MT. at 6:30PM Thursday, December 10th, 2009. December is our gift exchange month, please bring an unwrapped item to give.

Minutes from September by Adele Scholl

November's meeting was an incredible display of eye capturing photography. We had a few new members to the club, Jemina Watstein, showed some of her photography. She prints her images on homemade paper that she makes from recycled paper from the middle school. Her images are focused on the landfill, the growth of the hill of trash, along with items that could have been recycled. It was an interesting look into the landfill and good reminder to think about what you throw away.

The seats were filled at the Pin & Cue last month, as the lights dimmed and the show started.

Bob Howard started the show with some images of his traps, his camp in the Swan Mountains and a nice reflection shot. He also threw in a shot of Fay in the ER room, luckily she did not break her wrist. But we all could relate to waiting in the ER room. My favorite images is reflection shot.

D Blank showed five images, from her hike up Scaplock Lookout. My favorite image was this interesting perspective on St. Nick.

Dani & John showed us a preview of images to come from Lost Trail Sky divers and images from the park.

Dave Carlson brought some very nice images from a foggey days hike in the park & images from Triple D Game Farm. My favorite image was his from the Grinnell Glacier overlook in the park.

Doug brought images from Oregon to show the club. He had some nice shots of refelctions, waterfalls, and interesting peaks. My favorite image of his is one of his refelction shots.

Jane followed up Doug's images with images from Many Glacier and other parts of Glacier Park. She showed some nice flower shots. My favorite shot of Jane's is the red rock of Many Glacier with the incredible peaks in the distance.

Jerry started his show off with an incredible sunrise shot from his deck. He then took us on a tour of the lives of the Polar Bears in Churchill, Canada. My favorite shot of his was the eye of polar bear. He also showed a few images from the Badlands, also called Teddy Roosevelt Park.

Rhona showed her prespective on Churchill and the Badlands. She showed us close up images of some of the formations from the Badlands, and then presented some Polar Bear shots. I enjoyed the expressions on the faces of the bears that she captured. My favorite image is of a bear stretching.

Nick traveled to Upper Peninsula in Michigan for their fall colors. He showed the club a variety of nice shots of lighthouses, fall colors and images of the lake. It is hard to believe the weather patterns that are formed from such a large body of water. Some of images the lake appears to be the ocean. My favorite image of his is of a peer on the water.

Steven Mitchell experimented with star trails in his photography. I have never been able to capture a nice star trail photo, Steve on the other hand had several very nice ones. He also showed a variety of images of a fogged day, with dramatic sunlight coming through the fog. My favorite image of his is the Star Trails over Lake McDonald.

Jeff & I showed images Bear Mountain in Lakeside, and some sunset shots from our deck. We also showed the club some more of our images from the Wind Farm in Ethridge, MT. My favorite shot is of the full moon rising with the turbines spinning. Definately makes me want to purchase a teleconverter for our 200mm lense.

Winter is pretty much the only time of year we are able to work with our Snow Leopards because of their preference for cooler conditions. If you are interested in photographing a Snow Leopard in winter conditions, this is the time of year to visit Triple "D".

Message from the Triple "D" Staff

Northwestern Montana has already received several snowfalls and more are in the forecast.  In anticipation of winter conditions, the Triple “D” Staff has upgrading our specially designed filming locations.  Winter conditions are expected to stay by Thanksgiving and remain through March.  Snow conditions will vary throughout the winter, powder snow will be more prevalent during December and January.  February and March will receive periodic powder snow fall with a packed base allowing our animals to walk on top.

Photographing our animals in this winter wonderland is a wildlife photographer’s dream come true.  Viewing our 30 species of animals with their beautiful winter fur in  our gorgeous natural settings, is breath taking!

Some people hesitate to visit us during the winter, because of the cold.  It really isn’t that bad! Come prepared with the proper clothing and you will enjoy winter wildlife photography at its best. Some of our sites have warming sheds or propane heaters for the colder weather. Return from a morning of photography and join us for a hot lunch or stay in our cozy Howling Wolf Lodge.

Professionally Led Photography Workshops

© Paul Burwell PhotographyMany photographers interested in visiting us will benefit from the experience of joining a professionally led workshop.  These full featured workshops focus on teaching various aspects of wildlife photography to include digital techniques and image processing.  Experienced workshop leaders will provide instruction at the filming location and also back at the Triple “D’ Conference Room.  Our objective is for you to return home with the best possible images.

Triple "D" Events in Winter Conditions (No workshop leader)

© Paul Burwell PhotographyWinter puts the animals into their finest coats of the year.  We usually have powder snow during December and January with packed/crusted snow in February.

For the animals like Arctic Wolves and Foxes that look their best in pure snowy white conditions, we utilize a specially designed snow compound.

Please consider attending one of these sessions:

Horse Roundup Sessions

© Paul BurwellAll of the Horse Roundup locations are chosen for their incredible beauty and are representative of the old West. You can count on running horses in various settings (depending on the season) including snowy fields; mountain meadows blanketed with wild flowers; crystal clear creek crossings; ridge tops for evening silhouettes; ponds to capture reflections; fall colors; and rustic log buildings and corrals—all with the beautiful Rocky Mountains as a backdrop.

Birds of Prey Sessions

© Paul BurwellLynn Vaught of “Wildlife Return” has agreed to exhibit her birds in natural settings. Wildlife Return is a rehabilitation center dedicated to the care of injured, ill and orphaned wildlife, with the ultimate goal of releasing those that can sustain themselves back to the wild. Other than her resident birds, it is not always be possible to determine which birds will be exhibited until the time of the photo session. A full session is guaranteed, consisting of several hours to observe, sketch and photograph each bird of prey. All sessions are scheduled to commence with morning light.

Expect 3 - 5 birds in natural settings.
