GLACIER CAMERA CLUB

Next Meeting

Our next meeting will be at the Pin & Cue Bowling Alley in Whitefish, MT. at 6:30PM Thursday, December 11th. Bring a gift.

Big news

Christmas is almost here. When I was a mere bit of a lad there weren't nearly enough Christmas days in a year, now they come and go so fast I just finish one fruit cake and they're is another one on the table. To tell you the truth I think fruitcakes get a bad rap. They really don't taste bad and no problem with shelf life. It's about the only gift you can give one year and eat for the next five. I will never forget the one that my dad made when I was about 11 years old. His ingredients were a bottle of rum, a bunch of maraschino cherries, pineapple slices and some of that gooey brown stuff. He tried to keep it away from me until he had sampled four or five pieces. After that he seemed OK with sharing. That was the merriest Christmas ever.

I expect that our December GCC meeting will be at least as merry as any I can remember. We will all bring an unwrapped gift with a value of not less than $1.00 or more than $1000.00. A hat with a plethora of numbers will be passed around and we will each retrieve our gift in order of the number we draw.

I have a few suggestions for those of you who hate shopping.

Several gallons of huckleberries
D-5 Canons
Cool Epson printers
Airline tickets to Hawaii
A 4X5 Linhof for the film guy

Thanks and don't miss our December gift exchange.

Minutes from November by Adele Scholl

Sorry for the delayed newsletter this month. I just returned from visiting my three nephews in New Jersey, just outside of New York City. I have always loved to travel, the feel of exploration is the best. Not knowing how other cultures live. I feel like I traveled to another country. We toured 5th Avenue, I think that all the people that live in Montana were on the streets of 5th ave. Jeff & I had a funny experience when my brother said take his two boys, 3 & 6 and go see the Rockefeller Christmas tree and take some pics. We were both shell shocked, my brother was going to circle the block so that he did have to pay $53 for one hour of parking. I wrapped the camera around my body but was more concerned about keeping tabs of the boys & Jeff. We finally made it to the tree, it was nice site to see, if there were not thousands of people. I made Jeff and the two boys stand in front of the tree to grab a shot for Papi. Got the shots and headed back to the van, when we made it back with both boys I looked at the pics and they were underexposed. It was the perfect picture to capture the experience for Jeff and I, at least the boys were exposed properly however they all had a look of chaos.

Last month's camera club we took a journey to India. Absolutely outstanding, just incredible shots from our camera club member Lyle. His shots capture the sole of each person he photographs. Thanks for bringing the shots. I will have fun revisiting them to write this newsletter.

I would like to thank Jesse and Ed for helping run camera club.

Bruce started off the November meeting with a shot of him in the cockpit of a plane he used to fly a 747. He also showed pics of B17 and P38 old war planes that came to valley, his osprey that lives near his house and a some shots of an old engine.

D followed up the show with some of her amazing fall shots from Holland Lake. She some outstanding shots of larch needles, reflections on the lake and a vertical panoramic of a large larch tree. Fall is definitely my favorite time of year, and D took us to a place I have never been. She also did some macro shots of icy larch needles. Very hard to pick just one shot. I loved them all.

Doug was next to show some great fall and tree shots. He traveled to California and took pictures of the Redwoods. He also showed some shots from closer to home from the park. They were amazing larch needles in small falls. Slowing down the shutter he captured the feeling you hear sitting next to water. A peaceful sound. Nice shots Doug.

Jeff and I showed shots from Eureka's Wilderness Club to Elk Springs Ranch in Florence MT to Glacier Park. I always have a great time trying to figure out the best features of a property. Why I would want to buy the property. Elk Springs Ranch is amazing place in the small town of Florence, MT. They own thousands of acres that back up next to National Forest. We spent two days there photographing horses, cows and the fall colors. I said I could live in Missoula if I could live at Elk Springs. My favorite shot of our was one from Lake McDonald. Jeff and I were married on the banks of the lake and will always hold this place close to us.

Jane presented shots from Glacier Park. Again I never get tired of looking at the park or Jane's shots. She had close up shots of lady slipper orchids, McDonald Creek, and a cute Marmot. My favorite shot of her group was the image of Heaven's Peak with great colors surrounding it.

Lyle showed my favorite shots from the meeting. He took us to India. He told the club that he lived there for 10 years. He took us into the heart and sole of the cities and people that he lived near. Showing shots from Delhi, Rishikesh, Gangotri, mainly in the northern part of India. It is hard to pick just one shot of his, he showed us Infrared Black and White, Color shots and Black & White. All shot on film that he had scanned. Just incredible shots of the people that live there, temples and the cities that he spent time in. He showed one photo of a 5 star hotel's fountain and in the background you could see the fountain of the native people. Capturing two different worlds. He also had a funny shot of a man who was a dentist, he had everything from plyers to fake teeth and was set up on the street. I hope I do not need work on my teeth if I every go to India. I did not have just one favorite, I have many, these shots to the right speak for themselves. Thanks Lyle for showing us a bit of your travels.
Nick had the task of following up some the most powerful shots that camera club has seen with some of his shots. If anyone could captivate the club Nick can. He showed some images from his Alaska Wilderness Experience, Photo Safari. He led a group up to Alaska to a special place called Redoubt Mountain Lodge. He had up close images of the bears, moose and more. My favorite shots are of a grizzly shaking in the water and this shot to the right. It looks like the moose is smiling for him. As to saw hey thanks for taking my picture. I like you.

Our Photographers are the best

As is always the case our November meeting was an answer to every photographers prayers. A lot of really nice pictures flashing across our screen and we never get tired of watching them. I was especially impressed with the fabulous work from the lens of Lyle Olson. We have had just one or two people in our club who tried casual portrait photography. None did it better than Lyle. Dani Dobyns brought us many truly wonderful pictures from China and Dave Fuller was the reigning people picture champion for several years. Dave spent several years in Nepal working and getting real nice shots of the natives as they lived. Lyle has a bolder style. He gets right in their face. When you look at Lyle's photos, you really look at them. They are framed nice and tight. Tight enough so that you can hear the street noise and smell the city. It does not hurt that his subjects are people you would love to know, love to spend time with and I can only imagine the tales they could tell. Nice work Lyle, thanks for brining us something different.

Adele has long been every-bodies favorite. Her good looks, personal charm and skill as a photographer is exceeded only by her ability to get high. Her pictures would be excellent no matter the elevation, but given the advantage of another 500 feet in the air and they are nothing short of super fadgulistic extra aladoushus. I am not sure how you spell those words or what that means but I hope it's something good. I also hope that Jeff and Adele continue to bring those really super shots. Thanks Jeff and Adele.
