GLACIER CAMERA CLUB

Next Meeting

Our next meeting will be at the Pin & Cue Bowling Alley in Whitefish, MT. at 6:30PM Thursday, January 10th. Doug Dye will demonstrate an interesting Photoshop technique.

Minutes from December

We made a policy decision on loaning our Camera Club equipment:

  • We will not loan any of our equipment to anyone who needs to take it off premises
  • The equipment can be used other than on Camera Club night only for Camera Club members for a Club sponsored event.

Once again our show and tell was excellent. Steve Rapelje introduced a new twist with an Elk movie. He also brought some real interesting shots of the herd bull at the Bison Range. If that weren’t enough he showed some spectacular photos from the web, which transitioned from B/W to color right before our eyes. They really were pretty nifty.

Becca really nailed the Big Bull at the Bison Range. She did several outstanding pictures. It didn’t hurt that old mossy back is in especially nice shape this year. Great work both of you and please keep it up.

Doug Dye traveled to California where he did some fun stuff around Monterey. His misty landscape stuff is nothing short of beautiful. They are very moody and mystic, wonderful work!

John McCardy hiked to Avalanche Lake where he did some really nice shots.

John Safford is my favorite photographer this Month. His photography included a wide variety of creeks, lakes, frost and generally nice landscapes.

Thank you everyone for making our club a place where talented people can get together and share a fun evening.

The Elves were busy at the Glacier Camera Club December Meeting

From the looks of all the cool presents, I’m not sure the jolly old Elf himself didn’t have a hand in the selection. He laid out everything from fine wine to slide storage containers. Not only did he bring cool stuff, he brought a huge bag full. -Enough for everyone to get two terrific presents- Great fun, Great meeting, more fun than I’ve had in a long time.

I have Adobe Photoshop CS3 for Photographers book and Cd, good condition, barely used some highlighting for sale $15. Thought someone in camera club may appreciate the deal.

How many of you have looked at the: www.glaciercameraclub.com

Web site lately.

There are some really nice portfolios on it. Take some time and really look it over. I know you will enjoy it immensely.

Hello Ed,

There was a question that arose in the November camera club meeting regarding upsizing an image for print. I just attended a 3 day workshop at Calypso printing in Santa Cruz that was taught by Bill Atkinson and Charles Cramer. These two gentlemen are very well known for their printing and Photoshop expertise. For what it's worth, their recommendation is to upsize in Photoshop using the master file as the target, as opposed to RAW, using bicubic and to do it in one step, resizing to the desired dimensions and resampling to the required resolution. When queried by one of the attendees, Bill did allow that upsizing to 20% more than needed with bicubic smoother and then downsizing to the required size with bicubic sharper might lend slightly better results. I will say that I saw 48 10 X 8 proofs and 24 20 X 24 prints made by the participants using Bill and Charlie's method that were simply stunning.

I thought I'd pass that on for anyone who might be interested.

I hope things are going well.

From Doug

Ed,

Doug Dye will demonstrate two techniques he is using with Photo Shop to compensate for limitations imposed by camera and lens. The first is a method to increase the depth of field in an image by merging images,of the same scene, having different focus points. The second Photo Shop method is merging photos of the same scene that have widely different exposures ie an alternative to using a split neutral density filter.

I'm hoping these will act as a teaser to draw people to the workshop. I'm not going to go through the all the steps at the regular meeting, I'll just show the images I started with and what I ended up with. I'm hoping to produce more questions than answers. I know there are members of the camera club that know way more than I do about Photo Shop, I'm trying to draw them out and get them to share. To me that is the second best thing about Camera Club, sharing with others. The first best thing of course are the relationships developed with people.

Thanks again for your help, I appreciate it.

Doug

The 344 Gallery

John Kyle has some wonderful panoramic photography hanging at the Gallery. Please stop in soon for a look.

The Gallery schedule:

Please get in touch with me if you want a show at the gallery. Everybody in our club has nice photography to show and this is a fun way to show the world. March, April, and May are the next available months. We like to hang the shows for three months. If March is too soon then you tell me what months you want and I can change the schedule. Depending on the size of prints you have, you need between ten to twenty mounted, not frame prints. They can be framed if you want, but it’s not mandatory.
