Our next meeting will be held at the Pin & Cue Bowling Alley in Whitefish at 6:30 PM July 14th, 2005.
June Meeting
Our June meeting was lots of fun and well attended thanks in no small part to Jim Peterson's excellent program on Montana. It is with good reason that we look forward each year to Jim's return to Montana. He does wonderful programs. Filled with humor, great photo's, and fine subjects his features add a lot to the club's summer schedule. Thanks, Jim.
Myrna Flemming has been, is now, and always will be one of our club's very best photographers. She has a unique way of turning ordinary subjects into outstanding photos. She sees things from a different prospective than do most of us. It matters not whether she is photographing people shooting black powder guns, buildings, cars or landscapes, we can be sure we are seeing them for the first time. As a lesson for those two or three of us who have yet to see the light, her new digital camera has not slowed her progress to the status of pure genius.
Dani Dobyns traveled to China several years ago and shared many of her outstanding photographs of the area to be flooded by the new dam. They were captivating slides of the Chinese people working by hand to move the towns from the flood to the hills.
Now Mike Spence just returned from the same area of China with updated versions of what Dani saw during her trip.
Just to prove that no two really good photographers ever see the same thing even though they stand on the spot of ground when we compare the two. Mike's pictures were on a grander scale. With Dani's we laughed and toiled with the people and Mike showed us how much their hard work had accomplished. Two wonderful perspectives and two great slide shows.
Mike's pictures were certainly triple A rated. The color saturation of his slides brought life to outstanding compositions of some really fine subjects.
Thanks, Mike you impressed all of us with your fine slides.
Steve and Becca are no longer new members except for those of us who were in at close to the beginning. They certainly are, however, welcomed additions to the club because of their enthusiastic participation in club events. Not to be outdone they to were at the Eureka Black powder shoot and they also traveled to Two Medicine area to bring us up to date on the East side. Steve had some nice shots of Running Eagle falls. Also known as Pitamakan which was the Blackfeet name for The famous female Blackfeet warrior. But I want to know who remembers Trick Falls? I am no longer a male chauvinist but to me Trick Falls will always be Trick Falls. I have great respect for woman who earned a place in History when it really was a man's world, but my first look at Trick Falls was with my grandmother when I was very young. We both marveled at such a magnificent place as she explained to me how the name Trick Falls came about. The time I spent with her was magical and if she said it was Trick Falls then forever shall it be.
The falls was renamed Pitamakan or Running Eagle on July 11th, 1981 in a ceremony presided over by Chief Earl Oldperson.
Bruce is one of the latest in the parade of club members going digital. I do not hold this against him except that it moves me one step closer to being last. During my life I have competed in every kind of race or competition known to man and seldom do I finish last. The fact that this isn't a race could serve to console me but for the fact that there are other compelling reasons to switch. Not the least of which is money. I could easily have bought several top line digital camera's for the money I waste on film. Also the print quality gap has narrowed in most cases to a point of being indistinguishable. Even Ink Jet prints are holding there own against Laser prints on real photo paper. Well almost. My own opinion based on absolutely nothing is that prints in sizes bigger than 16X20 are still only possible with film scanned to digital files. Dave Filler is proving me wrong even on that point but not so conclusively that I must concede defeat.
Back to Bruce and his Red Bus pictures. They were perfect as were Rossella's nifty shots of her incredible art work.
A big thank you to all who bring images for us to enjoy and to help us learn more about our art.
A quick note about cell phones
If you bring one to the meeting check it with the Sheriff, it will be returned when you leave town.
Annual Camera Club Picnic
We will have our annual Picnic at Ed's house on Flathead Lake at 5PM July 21st. It will be pot luck this year. Nancy will make a big batch of Lasagna so that the bachelors won't have to go to the store.
Nancy and I will furnish the beer and soda. We usually have Pepsi, Coke, wine and some kind of bottled Beer. If you have something special that you like please feel free to bring it. The liquor cabinet is well stocked if you prefer a highball.
As always your friends are more than welcome.
From Viv and the Cranberry Country Camera Club
Greetings from Cape Cod: Thanks very much for the newsletter. Not only was it interesting to see what everyone was doing but the air blow for cameras is a good idea. I left Montana with a great feeling of friendliness from the people I met there including yourself. It was sad leaving because I think it is one of the prettiest areas in this country and I could have taken so many more photos if only I did not break my camera, sad to leave that part of my family behind but sure am hoping to get back there one day in the not too distant future. Our club, Cranberry Country Cam Club, is having our annual pot-luck supper next week with the annual awards for competitions, slide and print of the year, etc. We hope to have some field trips this summer. One will be a walk around Boston - always so many things to photo there.
I wish you great good luck with the Oregon Coast - another place to go back to one day. I did the coast with a friend from Calif a couple of years ago and found it quite beautiful. I hope you don't mind, I did forward your newsletter to our current President.
With many thanks to you Ed, best regards.................viv
IMPORTANT NEWS FROM BRUCE AND GEORGE
The bear grass is out and in it's most prolific cycle since Moby Dick was a minnow. The road to Blacktail mountain has more blooming Bear Grass this year than ever, as does the Danny On Trail. It is still early for The high country in the Park but if the low country is an indication this will be a killer Bear Grass year. The last year of prolific Bear Grass you could sell anything with a resemblense to every tourist who came though the Park. Just thought I'd let you know.
SANDPIPER GALLERY
At this time I have 11 members with 34 prints who have indicated that they will participate in the Sandpiper show. If more of you are inclined to show your photo's you must let me know very soon.
1. All work must arrive ready to hang. I asked about frames. Mary said the work did not have to be framed. Mine will be mounted on black foam core.
2. The Gallery Director will hang the show and will have the right not to display any inappropriate work.
3. 75% of the work must be for sale and the gallery will take a 30% commission.
4. A list of all items with price and title should be sent 10 days before the show in order for identification cards and for viewers to have a greater understanding of your work. They require a statement of purpose for your work.
The opening reception will be Friday August 5th from 5 until 7PM.
If you have questions please contact Mary Kelley at 849-6118.
You must contact me immediately if you intend to participate and have not done so.
This is important in case we need to cut down on the number of overall prints. As of this moment I believe we are OK. Mary Kelley just told me that about 35 is the number she had in mind.
