GLACIER CAMERA CLUB

Next Meeting

Our next meeting will be at the Pin & Cue Bowling Alley in Whitefish, MT. at 6:30PM Thursday, August 9th, Bruce Harris will present our program.

Newsletter is written by E B GILLILAND

Minutes from July

Jim Peterson really brought us an interesting program. Some of the best photographs on Earth and they came from Jim's winter Camera Club. It is fun to see what other clubs do and thanks to both Jim Peterson and Bruce Harris we get a good idea.

Jeff and Adele did their usual superb job of showing us the kind of photography that only they can do, beautiful aerials of Whitefish Lake. Great work and thanks for showing it.

Becca brought some extra nice Lake McDonald photos and Bruce Ruby took us to Washington where he shot old barns and fireworks.

Doug Dye, yet another from our outstanding group of photographers did some incredible creek shots.

Steve Mitchell was out and about getting Grizzly pictures. He got great photos and still has both hands. The other Steve "Rapelje" spent time near the water where he did some nice photos of Bowman Lake and some cool water falls.

James Haring get the prize for the most miles traveled, he was East of the Mississippi photographing a PGA tournament. That really looked like a lot of fun.

Nick did a great job with a really difficult assignment. He does buffalo as well as anyone on Earth. Getting the right light on a Bison that hasn't got the foggiest notion how to pose is an art in itself and Nick did it wonderfully well.

Rex and Jenna Short are to good to be true. It does not matter what they do it will be perfect. They did some of the nicest bird pictures ever.

We saved the best for last, Frank Vestey brought his medium format slides in for our viewing pleasure, and what a pleasure it was. Big slides still steal the show and when they are as nicely done as Frank's they are a sight to behold. He brought pictures from Bodie CA as well as from Mono Lake the Red Wood trees of CA and Trick Falls MT. A great bunch of great pictures and medium format to boot.

Thank you to all of you who make our show and tell the best.

Our annual picnic was another great success thanks in no small part to Jesse and Betty Jo Malone. Whenever something good happens it is a safe bet that they had a part in bringing it about. Our picnic was no exception; please thank them for all they do for our club.

There were lots of happy people with bean smiles. Swimsuits were in vogue and several brave souls went in over there heads. We had a beautiful sunny day, and again thanks to Jesse & Betty Jo tents provided us with plenty of shade. This is a fun thing that we do and Nancy and I also want to thank you for joining us.

OTHER NEWS

Prolonging Li-ion battery life

The kind of battery in most digital cameras is lithium-ion. To get good performance from them, handle them differently than other kinds of batteries.

  • Unlike Ni-Cd batteries, lithium-ion batteries should be charged early and often. However, if they are not used for a longer time, they should be brought to a charge level of around 40%. (If empty, charge for about 30 minutes before storage.)
  • Lithium-ion batteries should never be depleted to below their minimum voltage.
  • Li-ion batteries should be kept cool. Ideally they are stored in a refrigerator. Aging will take its toll much faster at high temperatures. The high temperatures found in cars cause lithium-ion batteries to degrade rapidly.
  • Lithium-ion batteries should not be frozen .
  • Li-ion batteries should be bought only when needed, because the aging process begins as soon as the battery is manufactured.
  • When using a notebook computer running from fixed line power over extended periods, the battery should be removed and stored in a cool place so that it is not affected by the heat produced by the computer.
The 344 Gallery

Shawn Coggins will hang his show the first week of September and we will have a reception for him September 7th from 5 until 8PM. His reception will coincide with the Kalispell First Friday Art Walk. Be sure to join us for a fun time and some fabulous Photography.

This will be the last month for Nick's show. If you have not been in to see Nick's photos, do it now. Nick is one of our finest photographers and he really has a nice show.

In related news we, or for sure I am having lots of trouble keeping my prints off the floor and on the wall. I have an idea that should solve the problem. It is only a problem if your work is not framed and we sort of discourage framed work in our Gallery. We have adapted the display to handle frames better so if you prefer to show your work framed at least now you can. If you still want to hang your work mounted on board rather than frames it might be necessary to put two small holes in the board and mount eye screws. The holes would be out of the picture area and would not interfere with matting and framing your prints.

I am going to schedule the March thru May Gallery show soon so if you would like to hang a show at the 344 Gallery, please let me know and I will put you on the list.

The Gallery schedule:

Nick Fucci August
Shawn Coggins September/October/November
John Kyle December/January/February

PROGRAMS

Bruce Harris from the Berkley Camera Club has a wonderful program for us at our August meeting. He will show work from a BCC field trip and will also compare how different people see the same thing differently. His featured photographer will be Ken Osborn one of the Bay areas best.

Occasionally one or two of our members will offer suggestions on improvements we can make in our meeting agendas. They usually are about programs where we would all learn more about photography. This could be a classroom setting with questions and answers. We would learn lots of interesting things. We have time to follow up on these ideas and I will schedule a program either every other month or every 3rd month so please if you have an interesting topic let me know.
