Around the turn of the 20th century a man named Pomeroy settled on a piece of land on the east shore of Bitterroot Lake. Pomeroy first built a small log cabin, where he and his family lived for a while.
However, his "eccentricities" soon began to show, and he started building a two story mansion on his tract, mostly using abandoned railroad ties and scraps of lumber. The place had crazy angles, cupolas, turrets, floors at different levels, odd windows and a hand built circular staircase.
The "Castle" was never finished. The house sat empty for years before being destroyed by fire in 1929.
